Things to Do On and Around Lake Murray: Kicking Off Summer with 4th of July Fireworks

Welcome to my very first blog post! I couldn’t think of a better way to kick things off than by sharing the magic of Lake Murray, especially on the 4th of July. There’s something truly special about celebrating Independence Day with fireworks bursting over the water, boats gathering in cheerful clusters, and the whole community coming together under the stars.

If you’re new to Lake Murray or just visiting for the holiday, you’re in for a treat. The lake comes alive with energy and excitement, and there’s so much more to do than just watch the fireworks (though that’s definitely a highlight!).

Here are some of my favorite things to do on and around Lake Murray:

• Boating & Floating: Whether you have your own boat or rent one, cruising the lake is a must. Drop anchor in a quiet cove or join the flotilla for the fireworks show!
• Fishing Adventures: Lake Murray is famous for its bass fishing. Cast a line from the shore or join a local charter for a relaxing day on the water.
• Picnic at Dreher Island State Park: This beautiful park offers scenic picnic spots, hiking trails, and plenty of places to swim or launch a kayak.
• Dining with a View: Several lakeside restaurants offer delicious food and unbeatable sunset views. Grab a bite and soak in the atmosphere.
• Explore Local Shops: The towns around Lake Murray have charming boutiques and markets—perfect for finding unique gifts or souvenirs.
• Wildlife Watching: Keep an eye out for herons, eagles, and even the occasional otter. Early mornings and evenings are the best times to spot local wildlife.

But truly, nothing compares to the 4th of July fireworks on Lake Murray. The reflections on the water, the sound of laughter drifting across the lake, and the sense of community make it an unforgettable experience. If you’re here for the holiday, find a cozy spot on the shore or join the boats on the water—you’ll be in for a spectacular show!  The fireworks are launched from two islands, so you'll have great viewing from many spots around Lake Murray. The event is organized by Capital City/Lake Murray Country and funded by the annual Taste of Lake Murray fundraiser.
